Chapter Five

Martin and Maggie

A pub in Liverpool was filled with the usual working class crowd. A mix of laborers but mostly dockers, due to the pub’s close proximity to the dockyard. It was a noisy, boisterous place and the men laughed, joked and complained about their work or families with a healthy exaggeration.

Unexpectedly, the door swung open and members of the Royal Impressment Service strode in, wearing the familiar blue and white uniform dotted with brass buttons and high rounded black felt hats. They possessed a malevolent energy about them and were capable of freezing the crowd of men in their tracks, some in mid-sip.

One docker in particular had a strong reaction to the “Press Gang” members and hit the deck in an attempt to crawl on the floor unnoticed until he could access the back door and hopefully escape down the alley. Martin Fitch had already experienced a close encounter with the press’s ringleader, called Wolfgang or simply “the Wolf” which accurately described the man’s predatory nature and thick silvery hair. Months ago, when men were being rounded up and corralled into the Royal Navy to fight against Napoleon, Martin had narrowly escaped the Wolf’s clutches while he was walking home from the yard with a couple of work mates. He just happened to turn around and saw the gang half running after him and the others. There were four of them in total, and Martin shouted “Run!” and bolted to an empty boat yard, as it was the only place to hide that he could see. He did not stop to see where his mates went, just tore off with the Wolf trailing behind him.

He escaped that day by hiding in a huge stray roll of burlap on the floor of the paint shed. He rolled himself up in it, and then lay motionless, trying to slow his heavy breathing. It was not long before he became extremely turned on by his situation and felt the beginnings of a hard-on stirring in his trousers.

This was not a total surprise to him. Any kind of serious chasing games or hide-and-seek as a youngster sent him giddy with lust. It did not seem to matter if boys or girls were chasing him either, just anybody would do. He soon grew adept at hiding the stiffness in his pants when he was found or caught. And now, at twenty-four with his whole future at peril, he found himself feeling like a schoolboy again.

Black boots crunched around the perimeter of the shed and stopped. Martin knew the Wolf could sense him close by, and that thrilled him deep down. He finally came inside and clomped around on the crooked plank floor, kicking small items of debris out of his way. He was just about to take a kick at the roll of burlap when suddenly one of his men shouted, “We’ve caught two, Sir!” Immediately he turned on his heel and rushed out to see that the men were properly detained.

Martin was weak from relief and had no plans to come out of his hiding place for a while.
